The Spirit of America Cast 1.jpg The History of Spirit of America
Spirit of America started before World War II, when the 3rd Calvary Regiment held military shows during the winter months to keep soldiers entertained. Originally, the show was titled “Prelude to Taps,” but it was renamed “Spirit of America” in 1970. The show is used to trace the history and growth of the U.S. Army from its birth in the American Revolution through the missions that have formed and solidified its spirits. By 1975, the show was so popular, it required a larger venue. The show retired in 1996, but returned in 2000 to celebrate the U.S. Army’s 225th birthday. Everything changed in 2001, however. On September 11, 2001, the soldiers were making final plans to bring the show to Columbus, OH when the terrorist attacks happened and the soldiers canceled the show in an effort to give the recovery operation their full attention. “Spirit of America” returned in 2002 with new hope and vigor, and the Army’s values stood as the centerpiece in the breathtaking performance. In these years, the show began traveling to places such as Pittsburg, PA; Albany, NY; Worcester, Mass and more. This year, Spirit of America can be seen right here in Greater Cincinnati at the Bank of Kentucky Center on September 17 at 10:30 a.m. or 7:30 p.m., and Sept. 18 at 2 or 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free, but must be ordered in advance.
